With the current buzz of Big Data, businesses have been focused on collecting as much data as possible to run their operations.  Now is the time for them to try and generate value out of that data by understanding which Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) are important to their employees and making that data available in a consumable way.

The task is challenging though.  Different users are interested in different KPI’s, and they are only interested when there is something significant happening that warrants their attention.  The typical business user no longer has the time to hunt through hundreds of reports and dashboards for that information, so simply extracting Key Performance Indicators and publishing them is not sufficient.

KPI Management & Alerting is Key

We spoke about the need for alerting and changing the way users consume data in a previous post.  Alerting is key to isolating the KPI’s that are most important to users at a particular point in time, but alerting is complex for a number of reasons.

  1. The traditional approach of setting targets is unrealistic for all your KPI’s.  Targets have to be set and maintained, which is labor intensive and rarely happens.
  2. Without care, alerts can easily go the same way as dashboards and reports, whereby you are overloading your users with a deluge of alerts that are just as difficult to search through.
  3. Different users are interested in different things.  Simply setting an alert for a KPI and thinking that that will serve all users is incorrect.  Often different users need different alert profiles.
